Sharing Student Work

Schools in the Past Interviews from McConnell Elementary  Spring 2009

My name is Ethan. I interviewed my dad about what it was like when he went to school. He said that it was fun. There were a lot of students in his school. Each student had their own desk and chair. School was easy for him.

My name is Destinee. I interviewed my mother about what school was like when she went to school. My mom went to McConnell Elementary. How cool is that to know that your mom walked the same halls as I do. My mom took her big tests when she was 14 years old. Her friends in school were Amy and Stacy. When mom was at McConnell it was a smaller school than it is today. The school was made out of bricks just like it is today. Mom used paper and pencils to write on in school. At recess mom played with her friends on the playground. They liked to swing.

My name is Karly. I interviewed my mom about what school was like when she went to school. Mom went to Booker T. Washington School in fifth grade. Her school had desks and chairs just like ours. When mom was in third grade she was eight years old, just like me. Mom went to five different elementary schools. That must have been hard. I have only been to McConnell. Mom’s favorite school was Falling Water Elementary and DraperElementary School in North Carolina.

My name is Brittany. I interviewed my grandmother to find out what school was like when she went to school. My grandmother spent her day in one classroom all day during elementary school. There were only white kids in the school. Other races of kids went to school with only their race in them. You had no computer or television. You only got taught reading, writing, and arithmetic. In middle school she changed classes for each subject. Her subjects included history, geography and P.E. When my grandmother went to high school, the school district started mixing races in schools. She said this was when they had riots and police at the school. It was a very bad time and hard to get through the day at school with all the problems.
